GST inclusive vs exclusive price in simple terms
Toolance Editorial TeamReviewed by Toolance Content Review
In one sentence

Exclusive means tax is added on top of the base price. Inclusive means the quoted total already contains GST.

When this helps

Use this when you write Indian quotations, check a client invoice, or reverse-calculate taxable value from a GST-inclusive amount. Intra-state supplies usually split into CGST and SGST. Inter-state supplies use IGST.

If you invoice with VAT outside India, see the VAT for freelancers guide instead.

How to do it

  1. Decide whether you are adding GST to a net amount or removing GST from a gross amount.
  2. Pick the correct slab for your goods or service (for example 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%).
  3. Choose intra-state or inter-state, then run the GST calculator.

Split GST on a price in a few seconds.

Worked example

₹10,000 exclusive at 18% intra-state becomes ₹11,800 total, with ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST. If a client quotes ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST, remove GST to find the ₹10,000 taxable value.

What this does not decide

  • HSN classification and exemptions.
  • Whether you must register or issue e-invoices.
  • Filing on the GST portal - always use official invoices and your CA when needed.
