Inflation means the same money gradually buys less
If an India-labelled household basket costs ₹1,000 today, it would cost about ₹1,629 after 10 years and ₹2,653 after 20 years if prices rose by exactly 5% every year. Nothing here predicts that inflation will be 5%; it is a transparent illustration of compounding.
The practical response is not to guess one perfect rate. Test a conservative, base and high-inflation case, compare salary and savings growth with each case, and express long-term goals in future rupees. Your own spending mix may rise faster or slower than the published Consumer Price Index.
Imagine filling a small basket with rice, vegetables, cooking oil, soap and a bus pass for ₹1,000. Years later you still carry the same ₹1,000 note, but one or two items no longer fit. That missing part is the everyday meaning of lost purchasing power. Inflation is usually reported as a percentage change in a broad price index; a household experiences it as a change in what income and savings can actually cover.
India context matters. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) publishes the Consumer Price Index for rural, urban and combined India. Its basket and weights represent many households, not your exact rent, school, healthcare or food pattern. MoSPI reported provisional all-India CPI inflation of 4.45% for July 2026. That is a measured year-on-year observation, not the rate used as a forecast in this article.
Nominal value and real value answer different questions
Nominal value is the number printed on money or an account statement. If ₹1,00,000 stays in cash, its nominal value remains ₹1,00,000. Real value adjusts that number for price changes and asks what it can buy compared with today. At a constant illustrative 5% inflation rate, ₹1,00,000 held without interest for ten years would have purchasing power of about ₹61,391 in today's rupees: ₹1,00,000 / 1.0510.
This distinction prevents a common planning error. A future salary of ₹1,00,000 a month sounds larger than a current salary of ₹70,000, but it is not automatically a better living standard. The comparison requires the years between them and the prices faced over those years. Likewise, a savings balance can rise while its real value falls if its after-tax growth is below inflation.
Convert today's cost into a future cost
- Today's cost is the current price of the exact goal or basket.
- Inflation rate is a scenario assumption written as a decimal: 5% becomes 0.05.
- Years is the full period over which the price change compounds.
- Real purchasing power of a fixed future amount = nominal amount / (1 + inflation rate)years.
Inflation compounds because each year's percentage applies to the price already increased in earlier years. Use multiple rates; a smooth constant rate is a model, while real prices move unevenly.

At 5%, the price does not merely add ₹50 each year. The tenth increase applies after nine earlier increases; over 20 years the illustrative cost becomes about 2.65 times today's cost.
Reverse the question for a fixed ₹1,000 balance. At 5%, its real purchasing power is about ₹784 after five years, ₹614 after ten and ₹377 after twenty. These figures are reciprocals of the inflation factors: ₹1,000 / 1.055, / 1.0510 and / 1.0520. This does not mean the bank removes money; it means the unchanged balance covers a smaller basket.
Your personal inflation basket can differ from headline CPI
A broad index combines many goods and services using published weights. Your household has its own weights. A renter whose rent rises sharply, a family paying school fees and medicines, and a mortgage-free retiree cooking at home can experience different cost pressure in the same city. Geography matters too: MoSPI publishes rural, urban and state or Union Territory information because price patterns are not identical everywhere.
Build a simple personal basket from 6 to 12 months of transactions. Group spending into housing, food, transport, healthcare, education, utilities and other essentials. Record each category's current monthly average and compare it with the same category a year earlier, adjusting for quality or quantity changes where possible. Weight each change by its share of your spending. Do not call a larger grocery bill inflation if it came from feeding another person or buying more.

Inflation changes the meaning of salary raises and idle savings
A salary increase should be judged in real terms. If take-home rises from ₹60,000 to ₹63,600, the nominal raise is 6%. With 5% inflation over the same period, the exact real change is (1.06 / 1.05) − 1 = 0.95%, not 1% exactly. The household is slightly ahead overall, but a faster-rising personal basket could erase that gain. Compare like periods and after-tax take-home amounts.
Cash still has important jobs: bills, emergencies and near-term goals need stability and access. The mistake is assuming a fixed cash amount preserves long-term purchasing power. Nominal return is not real return
If an investment grows 8% while prices rise 5%, saying the real return is 3% is a useful shortcut. The exact calculation is (1.08 / 1.05) − 1 = 2.86%. On ₹1,00,000, 8% growth produces ₹1,08,000. Dividing by 1.05 gives real end value of about ₹1,02,857 in today's rupees. Taxes and fees can reduce the investor's real result further.

What the comparison shows: A long-term plan should not depend on the lowest result. Use the range to test contribution levels, salary needs and retirement expenses, then update it with actual experience.
Inflation-aware planning checklist
- Write every long-term goal in today's rupees and record its date.
- Choose at least three inflation assumptions and label them illustrations.
- Show the compounding formula, rate, years and rounding used.
- Track a personal basket for categories that dominate your household.
- Compare salary growth with inflation over the same period.
- Compare investment growth after fees and tax with the inflation assumption.
- Keep emergency and near-term money accessible even if its real return is low.
- Inflate retirement expenses, especially healthcare, rather than only the corpus.
- Review assumptions annually and after major household changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating one rate as a forecast. A constant 3%, 5% or 7% path is a scenario for understanding sensitivity.
- Adding instead of compounding. Twenty years at 5% is a 165% price increase, not simply 100%.
- Confusing a bigger balance with more wealth. Check what the balance buys in today's rupees.
- Using headline CPI as a perfect personal measure. Housing, health, education and food weights differ by household.
- Subtracting inflation carelessly. Use (1 + nominal return) / (1 + inflation) − 1 for an exact real return.
- Ignoring tax, fees and risk. The return available to spend may be below the headline investment return.
- Removing all cash. Purchasing-power protection does not replace liquidity for emergencies and near goals.
