AI is useful for drafting and exploring—not for blindly deciding
Ask an AI, “I take home ₹80,000, spend about ₹63,000 and want to save ₹300,000 in 18 months. What should I change?” It can organise the problem, suggest categories and produce scenarios in seconds. That speed is valuable, especially when a blank spreadsheet is the main obstacle.
The response is still a draft. A model may invent a rule, misread a transaction, use stale tax or product information, or calculate inconsistently. Remove identifying data, verify arithmetic with a deterministic calculator, check time-sensitive claims against current authoritative sources, and involve a qualified professional when an error could materially affect your home, debt, tax, insurance or investments.
What people can use AI for in personal finance
Budget drafting is a good starting use. AI can turn a list of income, bills and goals into a proposed monthly plan, explain unfamiliar terms, or rewrite a budget in plain language. It can suggest questions you forgot to ask: Is an annual insurance premium represented monthly? Is irregular income being treated as guaranteed? Is there an emergency buffer before an investment contribution?
Expense categorisation can reduce repetitive work. A model can propose labels for sanitised merchant descriptions, group spending into needs, wants and future goals, or flag a recurring payment for review. Treat labels as suggestions. “Amazon” does not reveal whether a purchase was medicine, work equipment or entertainment; a transfer may be saving rather than spending. What-if analysis is useful for generating cases: “Show my plan if rent rises 8%, if I save ₹2,000 more, and if income is delayed for one month.” AI is good at identifying variables and explaining trade-offs. It is not the best final calculation engine. Copy the agreed inputs into the relevant calculator and compare outputs under the same assumptions.
AI can also prepare a meeting checklist, summarise a document you are allowed to share, or explain why two options differ. These tasks support a decision; they do not transfer responsibility for the decision to the model.
From a realistic prompt to a checked savings plan

The AI draft says the gap is ₹276,000 and suggests ₹15,333 per month. Verify: ₹300,000 − ₹24,000 = ₹276,000; ₹276,000 ÷ 18 = ₹15,333.33. Current surplus is ₹80,000 − ₹63,000 = ₹17,000, leaving about ₹1,666.67 monthly after the planned transfer.
Result
₹15,333.33 a month before interestThe target fits the stated monthly cash flow on paper, but only with a narrow buffer. The person should verify spending, irregular costs and where the goal money will be held before automating it.
The useful prompt does not ask, “What is the best plan?” It states the goal, time, known numbers and desired output: “Use no assumed return. Show the formula. Identify missing information. Do not use tax or investment rules unless you cite an official current source.” After receiving the draft, independently recompute each line and enter ₹24,000 starting savings, ₹300,000 target and 18 months into the Savings Calculator. If the calculator applies interest or contribution timing differently, align those assumptions before comparing.
Then verify the non-arithmetic conclusion. An AI might call ₹1,667 an adequate buffer without knowing annual bills, dependants, income stability or emergency reserves. Review at least three months of transactions, add predictable irregular costs, and lower the goal transfer if the remaining cash is fragile. This is the distinction between correct division and a suitable plan.

Where confident AI answers create risk
Hallucination means generated content can sound coherent while being unsupported or false. A model may invent a calculator feature, cite a page that does not exist, transpose figures or silently change an assumption. Asking for citations helps inspection but does not make the citations genuine. Open each source and confirm that it supports the exact claim.
Stale information matters because tax thresholds, interest rates, lender terms, product fees and regulations change. A response trained on older material may not know a 2026 update. Label the country and date, prefer the regulator or product's current document, and do not rely on a search snippet or generated summary for a rule.
High-stakes advice requires suitability, not just information. An investment allocation may be mathematically neat but inappropriate for a near-term goal. A debt strategy may overlook hardship options or legal protections. An insurance estimate can miss exclusions. Use a regulated or otherwise appropriately qualified professional for material, personal decisions, and verify credentials with the relevant local authority.
Consumer authorities have also warned that automated banking chatbots can provide inaccurate information, fail to recognise disputes and create dead ends. Keep copies of important communications and use the institution's formal support or complaint route when rights, deadlines or account access are involved.

- Do not paste passwords, PINs, one-time codes, full card or bank-account numbers.
- Remove names, addresses, phone numbers, tax identifiers and exact account references.
- Use rounded or synthetic numbers when the task only needs a pattern or method.
- Check the provider’s retention, training, deletion and human-review settings before sharing.
- Do not upload statements until you understand permissions and can redact sensitive fields.
- Share the minimum data needed; merchant categories rarely require your identity.
- Avoid confidential employer, client, partner or family information you do not own.
- Use approved workplace systems for business data and follow organisational policy.
- Delete exported files and conversation history when no longer needed, where controls allow.
- Assume any online service can be breached; highly sensitive data may not belong there at all.

- Trusting polished wording: fluency is not evidence that a figure, citation or rule is correct.
- Uploading an unredacted statement: categorisation convenience rarely justifies exposing identifiers and account numbers.
- Asking for one “best” answer: state assumptions and request low, base and stress cases.
- Verifying AI with another AI: use independent arithmetic and primary sources, not a second generated paraphrase.
- Ignoring dates and jurisdiction: a correct rule for another country or year can still be harmful.
