VAT Calculator answers
Most goods and services moved to GST in 2017. VAT still applies in limited cases such as some petroleum products for certain states and legacy contracts. Many people search VAT for simple tax math on old invoices.
The United States has no federal GST. State and city sales tax is often about 0% to 10%. Canada uses 5% GST or 13% to 15% HST. The UK standard VAT rate is 20%, with 5% and 0% on some goods. Australia GST is 10%. Germany VAT is 19% or 7%. India GST slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, split into CGST and SGST inside a state. The header country menu switches the name, the preset rates and the currency.
A worked check
On a 10,000 net price, 20% UK VAT adds 2,000 and the gross price is 12,000. The same 10,000 with 10% Australia GST adds 1,000. To remove 20% VAT from a 12,000 gross price, divide by 1.20. The net is 10,000 and the tax is 2,000. Subtracting 20% of 12,000 is the wrong way to remove tax.
